My daughters, now 23 and 18, were born critically early, those less than 2 lb babies that fit into the palm of your hands.  Neonatal Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) life is a roller coaster, sometimes status changes minute to minute, from stable to critically ill.  

Our older daughter defied the odds and landed in that less than 20% category who would grow and thrive, with few, if any, residual issues or long-term complications.  She’s a 23 year old miracle and I thank God for her every day.

Our younger daughter also defied the odds and has survived more than 100 surgeries, antibiotic resistant infections, multiple respiratory arrests.  She’s now 19 and attends a local vocational program for Digital Media.  She has long-term health issues, but she warriors through.  She, too, is a miracle, and I thank God for her everyday.

Why am I telling you this?

Before my kids, I took birthdays for granted.  I loved family and holiday gatherings, but I didn’t “recognize” how truly special these celebrations are.

I mean, when your baby celebrates her first birthday, it’s a momentous occasion.  But, for me, I sat in the NICU, not even able to HOLD my baby girl, wondering if she’d survive the night, much less survive until her 1st birthday.

Over the last few years, it’s become obvious that my younger daughter will likely not be able to participate in the traditional, 9-5 workforce.  She has critical lung and airway issues that can land her in the hospital from a simple cold.  She’s a bright and funny young lady, who is motivated to succeed.  Her assistance with Stollen Moments is essential to its success.
